Senior Dog Waking at Night: Keep a Useful Record

New nighttime waking in an older dog deserves a conversation with the veterinarian. A short record can show the pattern without turning every restless night into a presumed diagnosis of dementia.

AAHA notes that sleep changes can occur with cognitive dysfunction, but other problems can produce similar signs. Observation helps the assessment; it does not establish the cause.

Record the event rather than a whole night of guesses

Write the time you noticed the dog awake, what they were doing and what happened next. Separate pacing, vocalizing, asking to toilet and difficulty settling. If you woke after the event began, mark the start time unknown.

Include relevant context such as a household noise, a changed sleeping place or an unusual evening. Do not assume a noise caused the waking simply because the two occurred close together.

Keep daytime context brief

Note whether daytime rest, walks, meals or the prescribed routine differed. Keep the usual care plan unless the veterinarian advises a change. Do not exhaust your dog or prevent normal sleep in an attempt to force a quieter night.

If a camera already helps you observe safely, save a short relevant clip with its timestamp. Continuous footage is not necessary, and reviewing it should not replace checking on a dog who may need help.

Share the effect on the household

Tell the veterinarian if disrupted sleep is making care difficult. Ask which changes need earlier contact and what support is appropriate while the cause is assessed. Avoid adding human sleep medicines or supplements without veterinary advice.

Agree on who responds overnight and where observations are recorded. One clear entry is better than several caregivers each assuming someone else checked. New severe distress or other concerning symptoms require prompt veterinary contact, not another night of data collection.

Record existing Well for Days supplements with the rest of the routine. They should not be presented as treatments for unexplained sleep changes.
