A Car-Trip Checklist for Your Senior Dog
Before a longer car trip, check whether your senior dog is fit to travel and whether you can manage their usual care away from home. The practical questions are how they will enter the vehicle, ride securely, get out at a stop and rest at the destination.
Test the complete loading routine
Practice with the car parked safely. Include the equipment you intend to bring, the door you will use and the person who will help. A ramp that fits at home may not fit beside another parked vehicle at a rest stop.
Ask your veterinary team about any support needed for getting in or out. Do not assume that a harness designed for walking or lifting is also a vehicle restraint. Check the restraint manufacturer’s intended use, sizing and installation instructions.
Plan the passenger space
The AVMA advises securing dogs during car travel, keeping them off the driver’s lap and away from a front passenger airbag. It also recommends discussing carsickness with your vet. Arrange the space before departure rather than trying to adjust equipment while driving.
Keep luggage from blocking access to the dog. Put the leash where you can reach it before opening a door, and make the loading routine clear to every traveler. If the dog becomes distressed, stop somewhere safe instead of handling them from the driver’s seat.
Mark usable stops, not just fuel stops
Identify places where you can park safely and reach an appropriate bathroom area without a long stairway or busy traffic crossing. Keep an alternative in case the planned stop is closed or too crowded.
Set the schedule around your dog’s needs and your vet’s advice, not a promise to cover a particular distance before lunch. Leave time for an early stop. Never leave the dog alone in the parked car while everyone goes inside.
Pack one accessible care bag
- Usual food, water, bowls and cleaning supplies.
- Medications in their labeled packaging, with the prescribed schedule.
- Current veterinary contacts, a care summary and emergency contact.
- Familiar bedding and any approved access equipment.
- Food and supplement labels, including storage directions.
Check destination requirements directly before travel, especially when crossing a border. This checklist does not establish which certificates or vaccinations apply to your itinerary.
Pack any Well for Days supplements with their original labels and keep them within the stated storage conditions. Do not leave a care bag in a hot vehicle between travel days.
