Build a Refill Calendar for Your Dog’s Prescribed Medicines
A refill reminder should leave time for the clinic to review the request, any required recheck and dispensing or delivery. Set it from the actual supply remaining and the clinic’s process, not simply the day the bottle is expected to become empty.
Confirm the prescription details
Use the current label to record the medicine, strength, instructions, prescribing clinic and dispensing source. Ask the team to explain anything unclear. Do not use the bottle’s color or the tablet’s appearance as the identifier.
The FDA emphasizes reading labels and asking about correct administration and follow-up. A long-term prescription may need monitoring; a previous refill does not establish that another will automatically be authorized.
Separate three dates
Record when the supply is expected to run out under the prescribed instructions, when to request the refill and when a clinic review or test is due. Ask the clinic what lead time to allow, including weekends and holidays.
If instructions vary or the medicine is used only in particular circumstances, ask how to track the remaining supply. Do not convert an uncertain schedule into a precise run-out date.
Track the request through to receipt
Use simple statuses: request sent, clinic response received, ready or dispatched, and collected or delivered. Assign one person to follow up so two caregivers do not place conflicting requests.
Check the received label against the current instructions. Contact the dispenser or veterinary team about an unexpected change before relying on memory to decide it is equivalent.
Have a plan for delays
If supply may run out, call the prescribing clinic promptly. Do not stretch doses, share another animal’s medicine or substitute a different strength yourself. The team can advise what options are appropriate.
Keep refill reminders separate from “given” records: ordering a medicine does not mean a dose was administered. Review the calendar whenever the veterinarian changes the plan so old reminders do not keep sending you in the wrong direction.
Track Well for Days supplement refills separately from prescriptions. An automatic supplement order cannot replace the clinic’s authorization or monitoring for a medicine.
