Choosing a Senior Dog Bed: Size, Entry and Cleaning
A useful senior dog bed needs enough sleeping space, an accessible entrance and a cleaning routine you can maintain. The word “orthopedic” alone does not tell you whether the bed fits your dog or your home.
Measure the sleeping space, not just the outside
Observe your dog resting naturally. Note whether they stretch out, curl up or switch between both. Measure the space they occupy without disturbing or repositioning them. Compare that with the bed’s usable inner area; thick bolsters can make a large outside measurement misleading.
For a dog that stretches across the edge of their current bed, take a photo and a measurement of the existing setup. Ask the seller for inner dimensions if the listing supplies only the overall length and width.
Examine the entrance and exit
VCA’s mobility guidance recommends considering beds that do not require climbing over an edge. In a product photo, identify the lowest entry point and check its height. A low opening on one side is useful only if that side remains accessible where you place the bed.
Leave enough space for your dog to approach, change position and leave without squeezing between furniture. Check whether the base slides on your flooring. A bed should not become a moving platform during an ordinary attempt to stand.
Read the laundry instructions before purchase
- Which pieces are machine washable: cover, liner, filling or none?
- Will the largest washable piece fit your machine?
- Does the cover need air drying?
- Can you purchase a spare cover?
- How will the dog rest comfortably while the bed is being cleaned?
Water resistance and waterproof construction are different claims. Ask what the seller means and which parts are protected. If accidents are new, discuss them with your vet rather than treating a washable bed as the whole solution.
Use the return window to assess fit
Check the return conditions before unpacking. During ordinary supervised use, observe entry, resting position and rising. Do not assume a higher price means a better fit. If your dog avoids every resting position or appears uncomfortable, seek veterinary advice rather than continuing to swap bedding.
For owners building a manageable routine, Well for Days recommends keeping purchase notes practical: what fits, what can be cleaned and what your dog actually uses. A bed specification does not predict a health outcome.
