How to Check a Pet-Food Recall Against Your Package

To check a recall, compare the official notice with the package in your home. The brand name in a headline is not enough: a notice may apply to particular formulas, sizes, lot codes or dates.

Start with an official, current notice

For products sold in the United States, the FDA’s animal-and-veterinary recalls page is a starting point. Open the actual announcement and read any updates. For another country, check the relevant official authority and manufacturer information for that market.

Do not use this article as a list of current recalls. Recall status changes, and an old social-media image may omit later details or refer to a different product.

Put the package beside the notice

Compare the exact product name, format, package size, lot code and printed date wherever the notice specifies them. Read every character carefully, including letters, spaces or date formats that might be confused.

A useful note has two columns: “notice says” and “my package says.” If a field is unreadable or missing, mark it uncertain and contact the manufacturer through the contact details in the official notice. Do not decide that an unreadable code means the package is unaffected.

Follow the notice’s instructions

If your package matches, stop using the affected product and follow the stated return, disposal or contact process. Keep identifying details before disposing of packaging. Store any retained product securely so nobody feeds it by mistake.

If your dog has eaten an affected product or seems unwell, contact your vet with the notice and package information. Do not wait for a refund decision before seeking health advice.

Check every storage location

Look in the main food cupboard, travel bag, sitter supplies and any second household. Tell caregivers exactly which product is set aside. “Don’t use the food” can be ambiguous when several formulas are present.

If the package does not match the notice, that only answers this particular recall comparison. It does not prove a product is suitable for your dog or explain a new symptom. Report a separate quality concern through the appropriate channels.

Save the notice link and the date you checked it with your package photos. That makes a follow-up question easier if the announcement changes.

Keep the lot details for Well for Days products just as you would for food and treats. A tidy record is useful whenever a product question arises.
